Open Letter
To: The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants
Re.: Note on Lars von Trier's Problematic Utterances at the Cannes Festival.
I wish to express disagreement with the terms in which the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants formulated its condemnation of Lars von Trier's recent provocative jokes and public ruminations regarding the Nazis and Hitler at the Cannes Film Festival." According to Haaretz.com, the organization stated: "Holocaust survivors condemn Von Trier's repulsive comments as an insensitive exploitation of victims' suffering for self-serving promotion and publicity. ... We cannot give a review of his film, but as a person Von Trier is a moral failure."
While I doubtlessly agree that von Trier's remarks were ill-considered and unnecessarily provocative, I feel that the American Gathering overreacted and responded in an exaggerated fashion, branding him as a "moral failure" and ascribing to him a self-serving motivation as if it were known for a fact. In my opinion, branding a person well-known for the humane messages of his films as morally deficient on the basis of a single joke, however bad, seems a little hasty; and judging others for motives we ascribe to their words or actions is never a reliable move. It is clear that von Trier is not and never was a Holocaust denier, and lashing out at him as if he were one blurs a vital distinction between someone like him and those who deny the Holocaust and make hatred statements against the Jews consistently and in full earnest.
Moreover, the statement of condemnation has turned out to be counterproductive in that it evoked an unwelcome and widely noticed parallelism with the outrage among the international Muslim community at the well-known Danish cartoons several years ago. One only has to look at comments on YouTube and various other websites to see that the attitude to Jews as a community that tries to suppress freedom of speech is threatening to become mainstream. If this effect has not been foreseen by the American Gathering, it should at least be taken into account for the future.
